4 Culinary Team Building Activities at the San Francisco Ferry Building
With its waterfront location, proximity to downtown San Francisco’s Financial District, and array of local food artisans and vendors, the Ferry Building is an ideal location for corporate groups wanting an elevated experience that goes beyond the typical office happy hour, escape room, or team dinner.
If you’re searching for a fun team building activity in San Francisco, here are four ways to turn your next group outing at the Ferry Building into a memorable culinary experience. Think you already know the Ferry Building? We’ve surprised plenty of locals who say they’ve visited dozens of times and were surprised to discover new spots they never knew or tried before.
1. Take a Private Food Tour of the Ferry Building and Ferry Plaza Farmers Market
Great for: Company offsites, team outings, intern events, conference groups, visiting colleagues.
Our Ferry Building and Farmers Market Food Tour is our most popular tour for a reason.
Rather than being limited to one place for lunch or dinner, groups can visit six to seven different tasting locations while learning about the chefs, independent businesses, and history behind the iconic waterfront transportation hub dating back to 1898.
Depending on the season and day of the week, your team might sample Acme’s famous freshly baked bread with artisan cheese and charcuterie, Jamaican-style patties from the city’s only Jamaican restaurant, Nepalese momos, or Baja-style fish tacos ranked among the best in California:
On Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, the Ferry Plaza Farmers Market gives groups the chance to meet local Bay Area farmers and taste peak-season produce straight from their farms. On other days, tours include additional stops and tastes inside the Ferry Building.

2. Combine a Ferry Building Food Tour with a Seated Brunch
Great for: Leadership retreats, executive groups, client entertainment, morning team outings, company offsites.
Scheduling a leadership retreat or strategic planning meeting? Instead of doing a catered breakfast or lunch, turn the meal itself into an experience.
For a group of 15 business owners visiting from New Orleans, we created a 2.5-hour private morning experience that started with a tasting tour through the Ferry Building and Ferry Plaza Farmers Market and ended with a seated brunch:
Guests sampled hard-to-get pastries from Parachute Bakery, farm-fresh Yerena Farms strawberries, frittata with farro salad from La Pala, freshly shucked Hog Island oysters, and Tsar Nicoulai caviar-topped blinis. Talk about a breakfast of champions!
Combining an activity with a seated meal makes this format especially fitting for corporate groups with a packed itinerary. Your team can explore and experience an iconic San Francisco landmark without sacrificing extended time to sit down, connect, and enjoy a meal together. It’s a fun, relaxed way to break up a day of meetings, or send your colleagues off on a high note.
3. Elevate Your Evening With a Wine & Chocolate Tasting
Great for: Client and prospect events, networking, executive gatherings, company celebrations, corporate events.
For corporate groups looking for something a little more elevated, pair a private food tour with a wine and chocolate experience overlooking the San Francisco Bay.
For market research company Forrester, we created a custom culinary event for 25 clients and prospects that combined a guided Ferry Building tasting tour with a private chocolate presentation from renowned San Francisco chocolatier Michael Recchiuti:
The evening began downstairs, where guests explored the historic marketplace and sampled tastes like beef short rib with fry bread, freshly shucked oysters and fries, and pesto Genovese pizza with seasonal greens.
The second half of the evening took place in SHACK15, an exclusive social gathering space in the Ferry Building with sweeping views of the Bay Bridge. Michael Recchiuti joined the group for a private presentation, taking guests behind the scenes of his truffle-making process before leading them through a flight of his signature chocolate confections. Wine and spritzes from Ferry Building Wine Merchant completed the experience.
For companies looking for an informative, gourmet group experience in San Francisco that can double as a networking event or client entertainment, a customized culinary experience like this one can offer a much more intimate, engaging environment for meaningful conversation and connection rather than a traditional cocktail reception or private dinner.
4. Get Hands-On With a Farmers Market Tour and Charcuterie Class
Great for: Interactive team building, corporate retreats, hospitality groups, spouse and guest programs.
Want an interactive component to your Ferry Building experience? Try a charcuterie-making class led by one of our resident guides and owner of San Francisco Charcuterie!
For a private group of 34 hospitality industry guests, we paired a guided Ferry Plaza Farmers Market tour with a charcuterie-making class led by our veteran guide, Katie Dyos. The experience began at the Farmers Market, where guests met local farmers, sampled seasonal produce, and collected fresh ingredients that would later make their way onto their boards. From there, they continued tasting their way through the market and Ferry Building, with stops featuring handmade tortillas and tacos, artisan cheeses, salumi, sweets, Jamaican patties, and other local favorites.
Following the tour, guests gathered in the Ferry Building’s Port Commission Hearing Room and learned how to build beautiful charcuterie boards using the cheeses, meats, fruits, herbs, and other ingredients they gathered. With wine on the tables, the class became equal parts workshop and social hour. Guests even finished with a knife-care lesson from Bernal Cutlery and culinary gifts to take home.
For teams looking for more interactive experiences in San Francisco, adding a hands-on workshop or cooking class to a food tour creates an easy way for people to participate without forcing structured icebreakers or competitive exercises that don’t appeal to every group member.
